The List

"Leof Kingsford-Smith locked himself in one room of his family home
for four days to get into the mindset of his reclusive character in Unit
46. 'I drove my family mad, they thought I'd finally flipped,' says the
Australian actor, laughing..."

"Engaging from the Outset"

"'Unit 46' is a comic yet poignant, look at the lives of two incompatible
neighbours.  Although it's sold as a 'fly on the wall' account, the script can
occassionally feel slightly too forced and self conscious, but the piece is
effectively staged, and the set is built with an attention to detail that is
reflected in the intricate characterisation.  The performances are engaging
from the outset, each on fantastically well observed and appealing in its own
way.  Leof Kingsford-Smith's Tim reads a stack of letters with such
endearing enthusiasm, and Lucy Miller's Diane retorts with such candid
audacity, recognise and warm to them.  This is an engaging and satisfying
comment on our society's failure to communicate."

Actors Leof Kingsford-Smith and Lucy Miller Give it Their All "

"Unit 46 is the apartment number occupied by Tim, a redundant letter-writer
whose well-oiled daily routine never fails to get on the nerves of his
downstairs neighbour Diane, a raunchy English teacher. The respective
occupations of the unfortunately-matched dwellers are bound to result in a
lot of turgid posturing as well as some juicy cursing as they strut around
their identical units, temporarily conflated into one for our viewing
pleasure...."

FringeReview interviews Andrew Doyle, Director of Unit 46

"FR:  So Andrew can you tell me a little about the play you are directing?
AD: Unit 46 is written by M Barnes. It is an Australian play that was first
apartment living and all the foibles that go on with that. I think we have
all lived in apartments and know what goes on..."

"
Treatise on Loneliness "

"The humble unit is a small box-apartment in a block. Cheap, efficient and
simple but not necessarily the place in which most people would choose to
live. Unit 46 is the home of a proud and bitter man, angry at a life he
disagrees with and which holds little in the way of a future for him. In unit 36,
directly below, a similarly angry woman is curious about who the man above
her is and why he keeps avoiding her. The play offers the audience a peek
into the lives of these two lost and lonely souls as they go about their
evening routines and contemplate their petty annoyances and the mistakes
that have led them to this point..."

"'Fresh from successful productions in Sydney and Adelaide, this is a
poignant, yet funny insight to the world of neighbours who don’t
communicate living in Units, or apartments in Australia,,,"

"A Solid Piece of Dramatic Theatre"

space representing two apartments, cleverly using the set without once
crossing into each other’s territory and keeping the illusion of two
apartments consistently alive. This is a play for anyone that has suffered
through apartment living and although the characters are to an extent over
the top this works in this theatrical genre,,,"

"Consummate Performances from Leof Kingsford-Smith and Lucy Miller "

"This Australian two-hander visits the familiar territory of frustrated flat
dwellers with a wrought examination of paranoid loner Tim and frustrated
teacher Diane, living above and below each other in a claustrophobic unit
block. Communicating only by note, broom bash, and muffled anguished
retort, their neighbourly feud becomes the scapegoat for their failures in
love, work and friendship..."

Performances"

"...'Set in a block of units, both occupy the same space despite being above

"Well-Judged, UnderStated, Near-Flawless Acting"

"'I feel the need to apologize. If you're a neighbour of mine, I'm sorry for that
time I hoovered at half past seven in the morning; I'm sorry that I snore very
loudly, and I'm sorry for anything, anything at all, which I'm doing wrong with
the bins. For these minor irritations of communal life are thrown into focus
by Unit 46, a play about two neighbours locked in a futile Cold War,,,"
